by: DAVID F. ASHTON - Devotees of farmers markets will have the Winter Market in Sellwood to visit every Sunday throughout the winter. Now that the season for weekly Inner Southeast Portland farmers markets has come to an end, the new “Winter Market in Sellwood” has opened, to provide an off-season alternative.

“This is the inaugural season for the market in this location,” said John Rueschenberg of CoveragePoint Insurance, one of the market’s sponsors. The other sponsor is Stone Cottage, where the market is held.

Its first day was November 3; it’s open Sunday afternoons, at 8609 S.E. 17th Avenue. “It’s a lot like a farmers market,” Rueschenberg agreed, to THE BEE. “In fact, we have several of the vendors that you would see every week at the Moreland, Woodstock, and other farmers markets.

“It’s an opportunity for them to have their stuff on sale during the winter, after all of the other markets have closed. And, it’s the place for shoppers to go who want to keep shopping with these vendors,” he explained.

Sellwood resident Marianne Nelson said she was happy to find a nearby winter market when she visited on November 24. “I live very close to the Moreland Farmers Market. When it closed for the season, I started driving out to the market in Hillsdale. This market is a good find; I will be here every Sunday.”

The 20 to 30 vendors sell foods like salsas, granola, hummus, pasta, and mushrooms – as well as pet treats, clothing, and jewelry.

“The market is open every Sunday throughout the winter. The plan is to continue it through May 11, provided that there is support for the market,” Rueschenberg said.
