Sasquatch at home at new Sellwood store
THE FOOT IS THE THING
Sellwood has a new mascot of sorts - a towering ten-foot 'Runner Sasquatch' that, like the store that commissioned it, is fashioned as a native enterprise, right down to its feet.
The 2,500 pound Sasquatch - carved from a single log by a chain saw, complete with a Neanderthal-esque forehead, beady eyes, and a burly rough-hewn visage - will certainly give the neighbors and visitors of Sellwood's new Foot Traffic store something to talk about.
For those not in the know, Sasquatch also called 'Bigfoot,' and legend says he is a large, hairy, bi-pedal humanoid that purportedly inhabits forests, mainly in the Pacific Northwest.
Behind the wooden figure, Foot Traffic is a locally-owned and operated walking and running specialty retailer, offering footwear, apparel, and accessories. There were locations already, in Northeast Portland, downtown, and in Lake Oswego. Its fourth location opened on 'Antique Row' in Sellwood just last month.
'We hope to add a bit of unique excitement and personality to an already-awesome neighborhood,' remarked Sean Rivers - co-owner of Foot , with David Pietka.
In addition to the enormous Sasquatch, which will remain on display as an 'art installation', the store interior has a thirty-two foot graphic map depicting Oaks Bottom and the Springwater Corridor trail. They've also built a 'shoe wall' made entirely out of reclaimed lumber.
Foot Traffic carries a broad array of footwear lines, including Adidas, Asics, Brooks, Nike, Saucony, New Balance, Mizuno, Kswiss, Altra, Vibram, Merrell, Spenco, Columbia, Montrail, Northface, among others.
Rivers adds that they carry casual footwear, including Birkenstock shoes and sandals, and offerings from Chacos, a popular outdoor shoe, boot, and sandal maker.
Shoe fittings at the store are high-tech: Foot Traffic offers customers a complimentary video-taped gait analysis, capturing a person's footstrike, which is then replayed on a flat screen TV to assist fitting customers in an appropriate shoe.
'We fit runners and walkers of all abilities,' observed Rivers.
In addition, Foot Traffic sponsors a variety of different races and training programs (many free, or low-cost) for all ages and abilities, ranging from competitive half marathons to cross country and track programs for grade school and middle school children.
To celebrate its grand opening, the store hosted a 5K and one mile fun run/walk called the 'Sellwood Scamper' on March 24 that was free to the public.
Rivers says that Foot Traffic stores have donated nearly half a million dollars to non-profits, fire departments, schools, and community groups, since they opened the first store more than eleven years ago.
The Foot Traffic Sellwood store is open 10-7 Monday through Friday, 10-6 Saturday, and 11-5 on Sunday, in the space formerly occupied by 'Sofas By Design'. The telephone number is 971/271-7264, and the store's Internet website is: www.foottraffic.us.
