Opening day for the ninth season of the Moreland Farmers Market was hotter than a firecracker – in terms of many vendors, in terms of lots of shoppers, and certainly in terms of the summer weather that arrived early, on May 14. The temperature in Westmoreland that afternoon soared to 91 degrees, making it the hottest day of 2014 so far, and breaking the old heat record for the date by three degrees.

However, the heat did not deter market-goers! Carrying bags and baskets, visitors swirled among the 30 stands, which collectively offered all kinds of foods and decorative plants.

“This is the busiest opening day I’ve seen since I’ve been with the market,” remarked manager Adam Seidman with a grin. “It’s amazing! No wind, no rain! And our canopies provide lots of shade from the sun.”

ASHTON - Mary Eastwood, the Cake Goddess - a former Vice President of the Sellwood-based Association of Home Businesses - offers samples to Moreland Farmers Market manager Adam Seidman. In addition to many returning vendors – some of them have sold at the Moreland Farmers Market for years – new faces, and new products, are on the way, Seidman promised:

· Fraga Farmstead Creamery – “Fraga Farm is an organic farmstead goat dairy, producing a full range of certified organic goat cheese.”

· Dinihanian's Farm – “This west-side farm, founded in 1890, was just granted organic certification, and will offer seasonal vegetables.”

· Abundant Fields Farm – “They call themselves ‘a petite farm located in Orient’ and will be selling Oregon Certified Naturally Grown items.”

· Tastebud – “This company, known for their ‘wood-fired baked goods’, will be bringing in bakery specialties; and by midsummer, will be making fresh, wood-fired pizza at the market.”

· Cake Goddess – “A market volunteer and neighbor is now offering her delectable baked treats. Make sure to taste a sample!”

“Shoppers will typically find between 30 and 35 vendors at each market,” Seidman said, “And, look for kids’ activities, live music, Master Gardener talks, and cooking demonstrations. Look for our ad in THE BEE.”

He paused and added, “Many thanks to Wilhelm's Portland Memorial, a local family-owned business, for donating the use of their parking lots to Moreland Farmers Market each Wednesday afternoon.” ______________________________
