Dental benefits misunderstood, underused
According to a new study, 25 percent of people with dental insurance provided by an employer admit they haven't been to the dentist in the past 12 months for regular checkups and routine cleanings because of cost.
This indicates that employees may lack adequate understanding about how dental benefits actually work, since dental insurance usually covers preventive care, including exams, X-rays and standard cleanings without any out-of-pocket cost to the patient.
It is true that fear of the dentist - or "dental anxiety" - is one thing that prevents people from getting regular checkups. But clearly, misperceptions about the cost of routine dental services are also a big problem.
Employees facing higher deductibles on their medical plans may not realize that with over 90 percent of dental plans, diagnostic and preventive treatment are fully covered without any out-of-pocket expense.
Some employees worry that a dental visit will reveal a need for treatment that's more expensive than they would like. The truth is, any dental problem caught early during a routine exam is going to be far less expensive than one that is found during an emergency visit due to pain.
