MULTNOMAH — While crews were still working to control a Northeast Portland fire, at 1:30 p.m. July 15 crews were dispatched to a house fire at 3226 SW Dolph Court. Reports were that a fire on the deck of the home was spreading to the attic.

When crews arrived they found the fire had extended into the home. Crews took hose lines into the home and pulled ceiling down in the living room so they could access the attic space. While attempting this, one firefighter was struck on the helmet with heavy ceiling material and was shocked by 240-volt power lines that came down from the attic space.

The firefighter was transported to Emanuel Medical Center, and released the next day. Firefighters were able to control the attic fire and begin the "salvage and investigation" phase. Fire investigators reported that oily rags on a wooden table were most likely the cause of the fire. Damages are set at $40,000. No other injuries were reported and the residents were not home at the time of the fire.

Sewage leak fouls SW Portland street

WASHINGTON COUNTY — About 500 gallons of sewage overflowed from a manhole at about 6 p.m. Monday, July 8, near Southwest 70th Avenue and Railroad Street north of Multnomah Boulevard, just outside the border of Southwest Portland's Ashcreek neighborhood.

Portland city maintenance crews cleaned up the spill. The sewage did not reach a waterway.

The sewage overflowed as Portland’s Bureau of Environmental Services was refilling the Fanno pressure sewer. Maintenance crews stopped the process and closed a pressure relief valve to stop the sewage release.

Portland Fire & Rescue responds to hazmat investigations

SOUTH PORTLAND — On July 6 at 12:18 p.m. Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) responded to a hazardous materials investigation at 0715 SW Bancroft St., The Old Spaghetti Factory. The crews from Station 4 (Portland State University) investigated the building and found carbon monoxide (CO) in the air.

Fire crews immediately evacuated the building and requested PF&R's State Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Response Team to respond. Further readings were taken and ventilation fans were used to remove the CO from the building. The source of the CO leak was a cooling unit. Two patients were treated on scene but were not transported to the hospital.

PF&R's State HazMat Response Team is composed of firefighters who have received specialized training in the prevention and mitigation of incidents involving hazardous materials. These firefighters provide this service in addition to their usual firefighting duties.
