A cold, snowy winter in Southwest Portland
Unprecedented snow pummeled the Pacific Northwest in January, prompting mixed reviews from residents.
Portland Public Schools students had ample time off, while adults attempted (often unsuccessfully) to venture out on slick, ice-packed roads. Still, some people enjoyed the weather, embracing a new host of activities such as snow-shoeing, snowman building and consuming endless cups of hot cocoa.
One such duo embracing the wintery offerings: Maplewood residents Jalene Brooks (left) and her son, Christopher. On Jan. 11, they spent six hours building this igloo in Gabriel Park. The previous night and into that day, a snowstorm had blanketed the Southwest Portland area with as much as 15 inches of snow in some neighborhoods — more than enough building material for winter fun.
