Forum to tackle coal pros and cons

Proponents, opponents and regulators overseeing two proposed coal projects near Port Westward are expected to come together Wednesday, July 11 at a Kitchen Table Conservation sponsored by Columbia County Citizens for Human Dignity and The Spotlight.

The forum's purpose is to identify public concerns regarding the proposed projects and clarify misinformation. Panelists for the discussion will include representatives from the corporations making the proposals, advocacy groups and agencies who serve in a regulatory role.

"By bringing to the table proponents, opponents and regulators, we want to help bring some clarity to a complex issue," said CCCHD's David Scharf, who is organizing the forum. "In accord with our belief in inclusive democracy, we hope to create a needed opportunity to hear the voices of Columbia County residents."

The community is invited to attend and share questions and perspective on the coal export projects, and there will be time allotted for questions and answers.

The event is part of CCCHD's ongoing Kitchen Table Conversations series, which has hosted candidate forums and discussions on democratic participation in the country.
