County unemployment rate continues slow improvement

Columbia County's unemployment rate is continuing to creep closer to the statewide rate, with seasonally adjusted August figures showing 9.5 percent are out of work in the county.

That rate is nearly unchanged from the 9.4 percent July unemployment tally, according to a Worksource Oregon press release.

Last month, the state unemployment rate was 8.9 percent and the national rate was 8.1 percent.

In August 2011, 10.3 percent of Columbia County residents were out of work, meaning 111 more people were working this August over last.

According to a Worksource Oregon survey of businesses, 9,580 people worked in non-farm jobs. The private sector reportedly added 10 jobs last month and government employment increased by 50. Because school was approaching the local public education industry added 50 jobs.
