Sen. Betsy Johnson, D-Scappoose is in the hospital after a traffic crash on Highway 30 this morning.

"She's doing as well as you can expect," said spokesman Michael Desmond. He said the state senator has broken her pelvis, but would not elaborate on her injuries, adding that Johnson is conscious, awake and talking to people around her.

She was driving on Highway 30, near Havlik Drive in Scappoose, on her way to Salem for work at 7 a.m. when she struck a car in front of her, said Lt. Norman Miller with the Scappoose Police Department. Johnson was transported from the scene to a Portland hospital by ambulance. The other person involved in the crash was not injured.

Miller said investigators have spoken with the other driver, but have not yet had a chance to speak with Johnson about the crash.

Desmond said they are still waiting to hear an update from doctors, but that it is likely Johnson will be away from the Legislature for the rest of the week if not longer. Salem's Statesman Journal reports Johnson is a key swing vote in four gun control bills that could come up for a vote this week.
