Scappoose VFW post announces Armed Forces Memorial dedication
Dedication is scheduled for Saturday, May 18 Armed Forces Day at Veterans Park in Scappoose
The Scappoose Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4362 announced Friday its plans to hold a dedication ceremony May 18 Armed Forces Day for the new Armed Forces Memorial at Scappoose's Veterans Park.
Construction of the memorial began mid-October. It is located immediately off of Capt. Roger Kucera Way, a few hundred yards in from the JP West Road entrance to Veterans Park.
The dedication ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. Patriotic music performed by the Scappoose High School Jazz Band will be played between 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
The memorial is 30 feet in diameter and is composed of five basalt pillars one for each branch of the armed forces, including Marines, Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard positioned within its perimeter.
Many individual and company sponsors contributed to the Armed Forces Memorial, including the city of Scappoose, which contributed $13,000 toward the $30,000 memorials final price tag and space at the park for it to be erected.
