Betsy Johnson joined a crowd of Scappoose and other Columbia County residents to honor area veterans during the Armed Forces Memorial Dedication in Veterans Park held Saturday, May 18.

The event marked the dedication of a monument built at the southern end of the park as an Armed Forces Memorial.

Local Vietnam War veteran Ron Urban said he does not see the monument as a memorial to wars.

“This is not a war memorial, these pillars are here to honor everyone who has ever worn a uniform,” he said.

Kulongoski took the opportunity to honor local veterans for their services.

“I know this is not for all veterans, but it is very appropriate that there is always a place in our hearts for those willing to sacrifice,” Kulongoski said. “I am more optimistic about this nation than I have ever been.”

Both Urban and U.S. Navy veteran Frank Weber received certificates of appreciation from the Veterans of Foreign Wars for their work towards raising the Veterans Park Armed Forces Memorial.

“I don’t deserve it, but I’m proud to get it,” Urban said.
