Fatal crash on Highway 30 shut down traffic for five hours

by: SCAPPOOSE RURAL FIRE DISTRICT - Oregon State Police reports Mark Allen Thomas, 39, of Oregon City drove this Mazda SUV across the Highway 30 center dividing line and collided with a Buick Century driven by Wayne Harvey McCormick of Scappoose. McCormick was pronounced dead at the scene and Thomas was transported via LifeFlight with serious injuries.A Scappoose man was killed Tuesday afternoon when a westbound SUV crossed the Highway 30 center dividing line and crashed into the side of the eastbound car he was driving.

Wayne Harvey McCormick, 65, of Scappoose, was pronounced dead at the crash scene.

At approximately 12:24 p.m. on June 18, a Mazda SUV driven by Mark Alan Thomas, 39, from Oregon City, was westbound on Highway 30 near milepost 16 when, for an unknown reason, the Mazda crossed the center paved median and collided with the side of McCormick’s Buick Century. After impact, both vehicles came to rest several hundred feet apart, partially blocking the highway.

Thomas was transported by LifeFlight to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center with serious, non-life threatening injuries.

Both drivers were using safety restraints and both vehicles’ airbags deployed.

Law enforcement officers closed the highway as they conducted an initial investigation into the crash. Traffic out of Scappoose was being diverted up Rocky Point Road to Skyline Boulevard, returning to Highway 30 via Logie Trail Road.

At one point Tuesday, a log truck broke down several hundred yards northeast of Logie Trail Road’s intersection with Skyline Boulevard, further complicating traffic.

Oregon State Police reported the highway reopened around 5 p.m.

OSP, with the assistance of the Multnomah County interagency crash investigation team, is continuing the investigation into the crash that occurred about three miles south of Scappoose.
