Dog found shot, tied to logging road gate

by: SPOTLIGHT PHOTO: MARK MILLER - The access gate to a logging road off of Northwest Rocky Point Road near where a dog was reportedly found shot to death Saturday.A dog was tied up, shot and killed off Northwest Rocky Point Road last weekend, and investigators are searching for leads in the case, police said. The incident occurred about four miles south of Scappoose, just across the Multnomah County line.

A spokesman for the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said the dog appeared to have been killed with a shotgun sometime Friday night or early Saturday morning.

“We did have a report out there,” said Lt. Steve Alexander. “A passerby reported seeing the dog on the side of the road. It had been shot a couple of times.”

The report was made 1:20 p.m. Saturday, and a Multnomah County deputy responded to the scene by 2 p.m., according to Alexander.

Alexander said the dog was apparently a pit bull and Rottweiler mix.

“Animal control did look for an ID chip,” Alexander added. “There was no identification on the dog, like a collar or anything.”

The dog’s owner has yet to be identified, Alexander said.

“We’re trying just to locate the owner so we know what occurred,” said Alexander. “It’s just an unusual circumstance to see a dog that’s been tied up on the side of the road and shot like that, and just left there.”

Although a deputy interviewed area residents, no witnesses to the shooting were identified, Alexander said.

He said the culprit in the shooting could face an aggravated animal abuse charge. Under Oregon law, that is a class C felony, which carries a maximum prison term of five years and a maximum fine of $125,000.
