by: SUBMITTED IMAGE - City Staff chose a play structure form Budget Extension Playground Grants in order to save money on the project. Scappoose city officials are taking steps to add features to Veterans Park that will provide activities to residents of nearly all ages.

The city is currently working with Buell Recreation to erect play structures geared toward ages 2 to 5 as well as a swing set. The city is also working to install two bocce courts in the park.

Jon Hanken, Scappoose city manager, said the play structures are budgeted at $30,000, which includes the cost of the concrete work to secure the structures. City staff is in the process of receiving bids for the play structure site work.

On Tuesday, Aug. 6, staff from the city’s Public Works Department met with a representative from Buell Recreation to help outline a plan of action for installing the equipment.

The play structure is intended to meet all requirements built in to the Americans with Disabilities Act to provide access to all children.

The new playground equipment has been ordered and is set to arrive the first week of September. The city hopes to have it ready for use by the end of September. by: SPOTLIGHT PHOTO: ROBIN JOHNSON - Bill Marinelli said, if there is enough interest, he would potentially start a bocce league in Scappoose like the one he plays with in Portland.

Hanken said the two bocce courts are budgeted at $50,000, but he is still in the process of completing a request for proposal on the project.

“Once the RFP is out, we’re hoping for an October completion,” Hanken said. “We have people who do play bocce. As part of a municipality, we want to make sure that we provide activities for people of all ages.”

Bill Marinelli, an avid bocce player in Scappoose, was instrumental in the construction of two bocce courts in Portland. Marinelli asked Hanken in 2009 to ask if there were any plans to have anything other than baseball diamonds and kids structures in the park.

Marinelli said the two Veterans Park bocce courts are proposed to be 11 feet wide by 74 or 78 feet long.

“What I’m envisioning is predicated on men and women who would like to have physical exercise that doesn’t require walking 6,000 yards to chase a little white ball,” Marinelli said.
