POLICE: Scappoose man breaks officer's hand after crashing stolen car
Derek Coulson, 25, arrested in Aloha after alleged police chase and resisting arrest
A 25-year-old Scappoose man is accused of fighting with and injuring a Washington County Sheriff's Office corporal after crashing a stolen truck into a ditch following a police chase Tuesday.
After a suspicious vehicle report on Jan. 3, Washington County Sheriff's Corporal Chris Bowman reportedly spotted suspect Derek Wayne Coulson driving a stolen 1993 Chevrolet S-10 around 3:20 p.m. in Aloha, near Southwest Farmington Road. Coulson failed to pull over and sped away, before shortly crashing the truck into a ditch, according to Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. David Thompson.
Coulson then allegedly ran from the crash and through several back yards before Bowman and another deputy caught up with him. Thompson said the suspect fought the officers, breaking Bowman's hand and receiving some "bumps and bruises" of his own.
Both Coulson and Bowman were treated and released from the hospital.
"He'll be off for a little while, but he'll recover," Thompson said about the officer's injury.
Coulson was arraigned on a number of charges, including possessing a stolen vehicle, unlawful use and entry of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, reckless driving, and felony and misdemeanor attempting to elude a police officer.
