John Cyrus, general manager of Portland & Western Railroad said first responders would learn how to identify the commodities of rail cars as well as their associated hazards if exposed. “It’s part of our overall commitment to safety,” he said.

County Commissioner Earl Fisher attended the event.

“It’s good to see Portland Railroad take the initiative to provide responders with a first-hand look with what they need to do,” he said.

Fisher added that although many citizens are concerned about hazards posed by the potential transport of coal through the community, commodities like chlorine and other goods transported by both rail and truck can also pose health risks.
