Deer Island man in custody after 'exposing himself,' sheriff says

by: COLUMBIA COUNTY MUGSHOT - Corey Allen Edgell.A Deer Island man was arrested after “exposing himself” Thursday, June 5, near a school bus as children were disembarking, the Columbia County sheriff said.

Sheriff Jeff Dickerson said Friday he and other law enforcement officers took 22-year-old Corey Allen Edgell into custody after he attempted to elude arrest.

“We developed probable cause based on statements [from] Mr. Edgell and from witnesses to arrest him for public indecency, first degree,” said Dickerson. “He's also charged with disorderly conduct and escape.”

Dickerson said it was unclear whether Edgell exposed himself to children on the school bus. A parent picking up her daughter at the bus stop reported Edgell's alleged behavior to authorities.

The sheriff and a deputy approached Edgell and ordered him to submit to arrest, Dickerson said.

“Instead of complying, he ran,” said Dickerson.

Dickerson elaborated in a Facebook post later Friday.

"Initially, it was just two law officers who responded to the call," Dickerson wrote. "The suspect ran and quickly disappeared in the vegetation. The quick response by several other officers allowed us to set up a perimeter within which the K9 officer could operate. We had the suspect in custody within 5 minutes after the search began, largely due to the rapid response of officers to hem him in and force him to hunker down in his attempt to avoid drawing attention to himself."

Edgell is now lodged in the Columbia County Jail, he said.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office received assistance from the Columbia City, Scappoose and St. Helens police departments, as well as the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office in Washington, in apprehending Edgell, according to Dickerson.
