Principal hired at Scappoose High School

Administrative positions at Otto Petersen, Warren remain unfilled

by: COURTNEY VAUGHN - Scappoose High School, which will be led by new hire Andy DeBois next year. DeBois has been vice principal at Liberty High School in Hillsboro for the past four years.Scappoose High School has a new principal, the superintendent of the Scappoose School District announced Wednesday, July 16.

Stephen Jupe said the district has hired Andy DeBois, a vice principal at Liberty High School in Hillsboro for the past four years, to fill the school's vacant principal's office.

“I wish to warmly welcome Andy DeBois to our Scappoose Community on behalf of the District Office Administration and the School Board,” Jupe added in a written statement. “I hope you will take every opportunity to greet him and become acquainted.”

The Scappoose School District lost three of its principals, as well as a lead teacher, at the end of the school year, with no successors immediately in place for any of them.

On Monday, Jupe reported to the school board that with just a month and a half before students return to classrooms, the district was facing difficulties in trying to fill many of its leadership positions.

Jupe said top candidates for two principals' offices — at Scappoose High School and Otto Petersen Elementary School — recently withdrew from contention.

“We did a negotiation this weekend, and the negotiations fell through,” Jupe said.

But Jupe said Wednesday that DeBois, another leading contender for the Scappoose High job, agreed to take the position just a day after the superintendent's report to the board.

The district still needs to fill a part-time administrative position at Warren Elementary School as well.

“The committee on the whole wanted me to go out again,” said Jupe, referring to a volunteer committee formed to help review applications for the position. “They were not satisfied with the applicants.”

The school board voted to accept the resignation of Warren's lead teacher, Jeff Wilebski, at its Monday meeting.

A new principal has already been hired at Scappoose Middle School.

The district announced last month it selected Ron Alley to succeed Pam Reynolds, who retired after six years as Scappoose Middle's principal. Alley is the outgoing principal at Astoria Middle School. He will begin his new job at Scappoose Middle on Aug. 3.

DeBois will start at Scappoose High on Aug. 1, according to Jupe.

A new business manager for the school district, Mitch Neilson, was hired in May.

The St. Helens School District had to hire new high school and middle school principals last summer. This summer, it has had comparatively little turnover at its schools, although Superintendent Mark Davalos announced last month he would assign the district's curriculum chief, Lisa Rawlings, to replace Karla Thompson as principal of McBride Elementary School.

Davalos was also set to reassign the principal of Lewis & Clark Elementary School, essentially having the two elementary schools swap their top administrators, but he abandoned the plan amid opposition from parents and staff at the school.
