St. Helens teens prep robot for competition season, which starts in a month

SPOTLIGHT PHOTO: NICOLE THILL - Justin Waid and Jakob Nelson, both freshman in the St. Helens High School Robotics and Engineering Club, work on building one component of the club's competition robot on Wednesday, Feb. 8.Students from the St. Helens Robotics and Engineering Club are building a competition robot from the ground up in peparation for the for FIRST Robotics competition season, which kicks off in March. The team, which goes by the acronym SHREC, has just two more weeks to finish building a robot to complete a specific series of tasks. FIRST Robotics is a national program that regularly hosts robotics competitions for middle and high school students. The program is intended to inspire an interest and passion for team engineering and problem-solving, even for students with no previous background in those disciplines. SHREC will attend its first competition March 16 at Central Washington University.
