Robert McKinney

March 4, 1960-May 7, 2012

Robert 'Bob' Earl McKinney of St. Helens died May 7 of a heart attack in Portland. He was 52.

Mr. McKinney was born March 4, 1960, in Portland to John Earl and Starlita Maxine (Lind) McKinney.

Raised in St. Helens, he graduated in the class of 1978.

He lived his whole life in St. Helens and loved the community and the people who lived there.

After working several jobs, he finally found his niche, landscaping. He owned and operated his lawn maintenance business for the last 10 years of his life.

He was also a cancer survivor.

Loving the outdoors, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, boating and riding his ATVs. He dearly loved his family and his family loved him in return.

He is survived by his children, Shawn McKinney, Krista Foote-Burdette, and Holly Endres; grandchildren, Jayden, Ariana, Kadence, Fern and Eli; mother, Starlita Peasley; brother, Tom McKinney; and nephews, Christopher, Michael and Jonathan McKinney.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 25, at the family home. Bring your favorite potluck dish if you wish. Bob would want you to smile, enjoy yourself and stay awhile.

Dina Sines

Oct. 6, 1936-May 10, 2012

Dina Mary Sines of St. Helens died May 10 at her home. She was 75.

Dina was born Oct. 6, 1936, in Portland to Fred and Winnifred (Pescod) Roggi.

She attended Archbishop Howard School Catholic girl's school.

While on a blind date she met Ronald Sines, and they married on March 26, 1955, in Portland. Because of his work with the railroad they lived in many towns throughout Oregon.

She enjoyed ceramics and had a business teaching ceramics.

In 1966 she retired at the same time her husband did, and they were able to travel.

Among the other things she enjoyed were crocheting, knitting and beadwork.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Ron Sines Sr. of St. Helens; children, Ronald Sines Jr. (Peggy) of Rochester, Wash., Vernon Sines (June) of St. Helens, Michael Sines (Annie) of Clinton, Tenn., and Kathleen Butler (Daniel) of Milwaukie; 17 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Fred Roggi of Beaverton and Louis Rodge of California.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, at the Columbia Funeral Home in St. Helens.

Judy Sokol

Nov. 25, 1948-May 9, 2012

Judy E. Sokol of St. Helens died May 9 at a hospital in Portland. She was 63.

Judy was born Nov. 25, 1948, in Ardmore, Okla., to John W. and Louise (O'Dell) Athey.

After moving to Portland, she attended grade schools there and then went to Coos Bay where she graduated from Marshfield High School in 1966.

On April 1, 1967, she married Sigmund A. Sokol in North Bend. They moved to St. Helens in 1984.

For 15 years she worked at Hi-School Pharmacy in customer service, retiring in 2002.

A Christian, her number one priority was unconditional love for everyone.

She was also the world's best cook, an artist and enjoyed singing, dancing and photography.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Sigmund A. 'Tony' Sokol of St. Helens; children, Brian and Kristy, both of St. Helens, and Daniel of Beaverton; four grandchildren; and sisters, Mary Sue Athey and Lucille Hinkle, both of Scappoose.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Waneta Thomas

July 3, 1919-May 10, 2012

Wanteta June Thomas of St. Helens passed away May 10 in St. Helens. She was 92.

Waneta was born July 3, 1919, in Astoria.

She experienced great joy working for the telephone company for several years and enjoyed traveling both within the United States and abroad.

She will be remembered for her beauty, poise, and tenacity.

Spending time with her grandson, Ron Baker brought her the greatest fulfillment and happiness.

She will be dearly missed by several loved ones including her grandson, Ron; daughter, Renee Menchen; dear family friend, Dick Dyer; great-grandson, Elias Baker; step-daughter, Karen Wardlow; great-nephew, Andrew Wardlow; and great-nieces, Kelsey Wardlow and Digna Artiles.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at the Columbia Funeral Home in St. Helens.

Thomas Wood

Nov. 8, 1952-April 24, 2012

Thomas Jefferson Wood of St. Helens passed away April 24 in Portland. He was 59.

Mr. Wood was born Nov. 8, 1952, in Anaconda, Mont., to Lee and Mabel Clair (Robertson) Wood, and was the youngest of three children.

His family moved to the Rainier area when he was about 10 years old and that is where he graduated from high school in 1971.

Later he moved to Deer Island in 1989.

He worked for JA Freeman and Sons in Portland building farm equipment.

Among the things he enjoyed were the outdoors, camping and fishing.

He is survived by his children, Tom L. Wood of St. Helens and Tammy Brooks of Rainier; grandchildren, Felicia, Corinne, Clorissa and Donavan, Lillyan and Daniel; and siblings, Bobby Wood of Rainier, Nancy Evans of Lincoln City, and half-sister, Phyllis Gibson of Tacoma, Wash.

A private family gathering will be held at a later date.
