Lady Indians find winning stride in Cowapa League outings

Scappoose moves up in Cowapa with wins over Seaside and Astoria
by: John Brewington, HOME RUN JUMP—Scappoose’s Lexi Courtney gleefully jumps for the plate after a two-run homer during Friday’s first game with Astoria. The Lady Indians scored 11 runs in the first inning on their way to an 11-1 win. They won the nightcap 9-5.

The Scappoose Lady Indians moved up into third place in the Cowapa League with three wins last week-downing Seaside once and Astoria twice.

Two of the wins came fairly easily, but they got into a little trouble in the nightcap with Astoria before shutting the door.

Scappoose also had a non-league loss last week, falling to Clatskanie on Thursday, 4-2.

The Lady Indians started the week with a resounding 20-0 victory over Seaside in five innings. That gave them their third league win. After the Clatskanie game on Thursday, the Tribe topped Astoria in both ends of a doubleheader on Friday.

That gave Scappoose a 5-4 league record.

This week, the squad travels to Banks for a single game on Tuesday, and goes to Yamhill-Carlton for a doubleheader on Friday. Those two teams are currently leading the league.

The last week of the regular season they will host Tillamook on May 8 and travel to Seaside for a doubleheader on May 11.

The team should fare no worse than third in the league.

Scappoose 11,

Astoria 1

The Tribe girls jumped on Astoria with 11 first-inning runs and held on for an 11-1 win in five innings.

Sophia Hart and Amara Templin start the rally with walks. Cassidy Hoglund then singled to send Hart home. Lexi Courtney followed with a double to score one, and Hoglund went home on a passed ball. Brittany Catlow reached base on an error that scored another run. Molly Reardon singled to score one more. Kennedy Bailey reached base on an error. Kara Kuiper bunted her way on base with a fielder's choice as Astoria tried unsuccessfully to get Reardon at home. Templin's second walk of the inning put her on base and then Hoglund got her second hit of the inning to score two more runs. Courtney finished the scoring feast with a two-run homer.

Lacey Updike threw the entire game, striking out eight, and giving up just one hit. She did walk four.

Scappoose 9, Astoria 5

The second game started much like the first-with Scappoose pouring five runs across in the first inning.

Singles by Templin, Hoglund, Catlow, and Reardon, plus a walk to Courtney, and an error accounted for those runs. Hart reached base on an error and scored on a double by Hoglund for one more run in the second inning.

That seemed fine until the top of the sixth when Scappoose put in one of their young pitchers. Several walks, a hit batter and a double later, the Indians were leading by just one. Hart came back in to pitch after six straight passes.

Scappoose increased their lead with three runs of their own in the sixth. Doubles by Updike and Templin scored one. A walk put another runner on and Courtney doubled to score two more. That was all Scappoose would need.

Clatskanie 4, Scappoose 2

The Scappoose game with Clatskanie was a close affair most of the way.

Clatskanie got a run in the first off two errors and a single. They added another in the third off a walk, single and a sacrifice.

Scappoose came back to knot the score in the fifth with two runs. Hart reached base on a walk, and then Templin singled. A single by Hoglund scored both runs.

Clatskanie would get the winning runs in the top of the sixth. A single, double, and single scored both.
