Teams picks up wins in two of three matches
There were no easy wins, but the St. Helens High girls' tennis team eked out a team win over Parkrose on Friday.
'This match was a nail biter,' St. Helens Coach Michael Gregor said. 'Boles, Mann-Miller, and Giroski all defeated their opponents rather quickly which helped us jump out to an early 3-0 lead. While the dark clouds threatened rain, every other match either went 3 sets or long drawn out 2 setters. All three losses we sustained were three setters.'
He added, 'Madison Kaplan squeaked out a tight first set at 7-5 but her opponent jumped out early in the next set 3-0 and never looked back. Opdahl and Normine bounced back from a first set loss with a 6-3 second set victory, but they couldn't get the shots or the bounces to go their way in the third set. The same was true with the Pardue cousins who took a while to get rolling, but then made the next two sets a stomach churner for all who were watching. The coaches kept telling our #2 and 4 doubles teams, 'no third set! End this quickly.' It didn't end quickly however. Chambers and Pratuang needed seven games in the second set to put away their opponent. Allen and Fritz needed tiebreakers in both of their sets to gain the win. I was pleased that we swept Parkrose this season, our matches are always closer than I would like.'
The district tournament is next week, May 7-9 at the Tualatin Hills Recreation Center.

Sandy still proved troublesome for the St. and #8200;Helens Lady and #8200;Lions' tennis team, but they didn't have many problems in a win over Liberty.
'Our squad played much better (Tuesday) than they did last Saturday against Sandy, but came up much shorter on the score sheet, only able to pull out one win,' Coach Michael Gregor said. 'Haley Mann-Miller once again squeaked out a three-set win against Christan Schladt, the third set going into a tiebreaker.'
He added, 'Lauren Boles was so close to pushing her opponent to a third set but couldn't get the second set tiebreak win. Our No. 1 doubles team took the first set but ultimately fell victim to some incredibly consistent shot making on the parts of Wells and Krieger. At one point they must have hit the baseline three times in a row with high looping lobs.'
The team had faced Liberty earlier, on the warmest day of the year to date. The team only had one loss in a 7-1 win.
Gregor said, 'The only loss was at No. 1 singles where Ayaka Terakawa just has too much experience for Madison Kaplan. Even though the score was one sided, Madison is showing more and more growth every time out.
'All the other matches were relatively easy wins for us as Liberty is comprised of mostly freshman. We wanted the players to focus on some strategy and technique (for the match with Sandy).'
St. Helens closed out the regular season with a match against Rex Putnam on Tuesday. It was the last home match for seniors Lauren Boles, Cassie Edwards, Kaitlin Pardue, Bethany Allen and Amy Chen. The district tournament is next week, May 7-9 at the Tualatin Hills Recreation Center.
