Scappoose track teams top Tillamook on miserable day

Tribe track teams prevail at Tillamook on rainy day
by: Miles Vance, TOUGH RUNNING—Scappoose sophomore Charlie Davidson ran with some of the best in the Northwest Saturday at the Nike/Jesuit Twilight Meet. While she didn’t have her best time, Coach David Harley said she learned a lot about running in a talented group.

The Scappoose Indians had little trouble in downing Tillamook in a dual track meet on a cold, rainy day on the coast.

'Miserable weather,' Scappoose Coach David Harley said. 'We really pulled back some of our athletes to get them some rest before we head into these last few weeks. Not a lot of outstanding performances due to wind, rain, and cold…but the kids had a good attitude and competed well against a smaller team that couldn't match our depth.'

Harley added that most everyone on the team would be healthy and ready to go for their match with Seaside Thursday. It is the final dual meet competition before the district meet in Scappoose the following week, May 16 and 18.

Harley figures the boys meet will be interesting as each school vying for the title- Yamhill-Carlton, Seaside, Astoria and Scappoose-have some obvious weak events, and different strengths.

'How those strengths play out will be huge,' Harley noted.

Banks and YC are considered the girls teams to beat, but Scappoose and Seaside will be in the mix, Harley said. The Lady Indians have some obvious strength in distance events, and recently added some speed to their sprints. The Lady Indians also have some strengths in the field events.

'We are also looking at what events will be best for our athletes at the state meet and enter them at district accordingly, without working them too much at district,' Harley said. 'That may make the team competition even closer. Should be fun.'

The Indians host Seaside on Thursday. District is next Thursday and Friday in Scappoose. Field events begin at 2:30 p.m. each day with running events starting at 4 p.m.
