Lions track team beats Sherwood

Boys win 10 events, two each by Ryan Byrd and Thomas Hughes

It wasn't a day for teams to go all out, but the St. Helens High track team still turned in some good performances in a dual meet at Sherwood last week.

'We did not run a varsity 4x400 in the boys,' St. Helens Coach Gerry Tinkle said. 'We had already won the meet. It was not a great day for us. We were a little tired after so many meets in three weeks.'

The St. Helens boys recorded a 79-66 win over Sherwood. Factoring into the win were double firsts by Ryan Byrd (1,500, 3,000) and Thomas Hughes (110 Hurdles, 300 Hurdles). The 4x100 relay team of Will Lawrence, Jeff Steinke, Kyle Vandercook, and Hughes posted a first. Lawrence would win the 800 and take second in the 200. Also earning firsts were Austin Sandford in the pole vault (13-feet), Nathan Reed in the javelin (157-10), Corey West in the discus (119-1), and Alex Lull in the 800 (2:10.64).

The St. Helens girls lost to Sherwood, but had some success in the meet. Kyle Reinholdt won the triple jump (34-4), the high jump (4-8, tied with Alyssa Holz), and was second in the 100. Cynthia Fenrich won the 1,500 (5:25.61), Michaela Munger the 3,000 (13:21.6), Alyna Habel won the 100 Hurdles (17.91), Sarah Hanna the 300 Hurdles (53.4, Habel was second), and Jillian Ross won the long jump (15-0).

'We are turning our sights on district now,' Tinkle said. 'More rest will be incorporated into the training schedule. Next Wednesday should tell us who those individuals will be competing at district.'

St. Helens hosts Sandy, Liberty, and Sherwood in a league meet on Wednesday. Only the top four athletes from each school will compete in each event.

District is at Milwaukie May 16 and 18.
