St. Helens boys tops in double dual meet

Experimental track meet could become standard
by: John Brewington, HURDLER—St. Helens' Thomas Hughes won both hurdle events at last weeks meet and will be a favorite at the district meet.

The St. Helens Lions weren't pushing too much on Wednesday with the district track meet looming this next week, but still had some decent performances in a double dual with Liberty, Sherwood, and Sandy.

'The meet is scored as a double dual,' St. Helens coach Gerry Tinkle said. 'We didn't score Sherwood because we saw them last week (a win for St. Helens). Liberty didn't score Sandy for the same reason. The four-way concept was an experiment and it went well. It was a good meet with a championship atmosphere.'

In the overall standings from the meet, St. Helens had some superb performances. Ryan Byrd handily won the 800 and 1,500, while Thomas Hughes also had a double winning both hurdles events. Alex Lull added a first in the pole vault, and Nick Dummer won the javelin. Will Lawrence was second in the two sprints (100 and 200), and also ran in both relays.

'I think our athletes rose to the competition,' Tinkle said. 'We had some great performances, most notably by Ryan Byrd, Will Lawrence, Thomas Hughes, Cynthia Fenrich and Austin Sanford, but there were some new faces too including Bryan Strang, Megan Waite, and Alyssa Holz.

'Our relays are not doing so well right now, but we still have a week to work on them. Rest is the most important ingredient in our training plan right now,' he noted.

Tinkle is optimistic about district and state. 'I still think our boys have an outside chance for the district crown, but we probably have a better shot at a state trophy. I don't want to jinx anyone by predicting who will go to state, but it is easy to figure out after looking at the state rankings on athletic.net.'

The St. Helens girls had some good moments at the meet. Holz won the high jump, while Kylie Reinholdt was first in the triple jump. Fenrich had a solid third in the 3,000 and a fourth in the 1,500. Megan Waite was fifth in the 1,500.

'The girls team just wants to move up to the middle of the pack at district,' Tinkle said.
