Tribe track teams trounce Seaside

Athletes set sights on district and state meets
by: John Brewington, JUMPER—Scappoose’s Mason Foumal won the long jump during Thursday's meet.

The Scappoose boys' track team won 10 events and the girls 13 in an easy dual meet win over Seaside on Thursday.

The Indians are gearing up for a run at district titles and qualifying individuals to state at the Cowapa League district meet, slated for Scappoose on Thursday and Friday.

'We had some very good performances all over the place,' Scappoose Coach David Harley said. 'I think the terrific weather certainly helped, as did being familiar with the venue, starting to taper our workouts, etc. Hopefully we can stay healthy and really have a strong performance next week at jayvee and varsity district.'

The Scappoose boys won both relay events, while Jadyn Harris won the 100, Stephen Bowe the 200, and Sam Padgett the 400. Mason Foumal had a double with wins in the 110 hurdles and long jump. He was also second in the 300 hurdles, won by Justice Oman. Mick Vanek took the pole vault and Asa Flanagan won the triple jump.

The girls also won both relays and every field event in the meet. Their only losses came in the hurdles, 1,500 and 3,000. The 4x400 relay team of Elise Harley, Julia Grabhorn, Molly Orr, and Ariel Viera set a new school record in the 4x400. That record had stood since 2000.

Double winners for the girls included Viera in the 100 and 200, plus the anchor legs of the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Charlie Davidson also had a double, winning both the 400 and 800. Heather White won the shot put and discus, while Carly DiPietro won both the pole vault and triple jump. Other winners included Katie Nelson in the javelin and Sarah Davison in the high jump.

'It is going to be a very competitive district meet,' Harley said. 'We have some individuals that we believe can make it to state - and those probably start with athletes who have been there before like Stephen (Bowe), Jadyn (Harris), Mason (Foumal), Carly (DiPietro), Charlie (Davidson), Tia (Carnahan), etc. We also hope to get some new kids down there and believe that they can do well including Heather (White), the relays, Ariel (Viera), Abby (Kessi), Matt (Shoun), etc.'

The district meet starts with field events at 2:30 p.m. each day and running events at 4 p.m. The first day is mostly qualifying, with a few final field and running events.
