St. Helens advanced in the first round with a convincing 12-3 win over Lakeside/Peninsula, while Scappoose lost a close game to Hollywood/Rose City, 4-2.

The Scappoose game was a pigtail game and the first of the tournament. They bounced back from the loss to rout Clatskanie 20-1 on Sunday in another pigtail game. The defeat was the second for Clatskanie and they were the first team eliminated.

The tournament continues through the championship game on Monday, July 20 and an “if” game on July 21.

St. Helens is scheduled to play IKLL/Willamette (Interstate/Kenton Little League/Willamette) this Thursday at 4 p.m. If they win, they’ll be in the winner’s bracket championship game on Saturday at noon. If they lose, they’ll have a game at 4 p.m. Friday.

Scappoose, meanwhile, has a long way to go to get to the championship. They had a game on Tuesday at 4 p.m. against Lakeside/Peninsula. Win that game and they would need wins on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to make the finals and then need two more wins to take the title. If they won Tuesday, they face the loser of the Wilshire/Riverside game with Rainier.

The winner of the tournament advances to the state tournament hosted by Centennial Little League in Gresham.

Other first-round games included an 8-1 win by Rainier over Parkrose, a 6-4 Wilshire/Riverside win over Hollywood/Rose City, and a 5-1 IKLL/Willamette win over Clatskanie.

After the state tournament, the regional tournament is slated for San Bernardino, Calif.
