Lions XC does okay, girls struggle at Bill Chapman meet
Boys have some good times, but girls struggle
St. Helens boys did better than expected, but the girls had a tough time at the Bill Chapman Invitational Cross Country Meet at Rood Bridge Park in Hillsboro.
Team scoring wasnt immediately available, so where the Lions finished among the 11 teams wasnt clear, but there were some good efforts.
We ran very well as a boys team, St. Helens Coach Gerry Tinkle said. The girls had a meltdown, but actually ran faster than last year. Bryan Strang had a great race. By comparison, Ryan Byrd ran 16:37 last year, but the rest of the varsity ran in the 18s.
Strang finished eighth overall with an 18:04.1, while Nathan Reed was 14th in 18:32.7. The top finisher for the girls was Megan Waite in 29th. She ran a 25:14.6, while Taylor Steeves was 32nd in 25:19.2. Sophomore Jamie Bradfords jayvee time was ninth overall, and actually within a few seconds of being the top girls time of the day. Johanna Parkhurst also had a good time with a 17th in the jayvee race.
St. Helens will have a chance to improve when they run in the Northwest Oregon Conference District Preview Meet this Wednesday at Blue Lake Park. They then have 10 days until they go to Seaside for a meet.
