Indians cruise past hapless Yamhill-Carlton
Tribe a bit lackluster at start, but YC has no answer for Indians' speed
There wasnt really any question that the Scappoose Indians were going to beat Yamhill-Carlton last Friday nightit was more a matter of how soon the Tribe would put them away.
After quickly putting two touchdowns on the board, Scappoose got a little careless for a time in the first half. A defensive stand with four stops from the one yard line quelled YC hopes and invigorated the Scappoose offense.
It wasnt a bad game, we did some really good things in all phases of the game, Scappoose Coach Sean McNabb said. We had some letdowns, too. We were a little bit flat at times, but we were coming off an emotional win (over Banks).
The Indians took the opening kickoff of the contest and drove right down the field in six plays. A 17-yard pass to Paul Revis, and a 35-yard pass to Kyle Kramer keyed the drive. Quarterback Taylor Loss took the ball in from the 4. Revis, taking the conversion snap, ran the ball in for two points.
Loss would hit 15 of 25 passes in the game for four touchdowns. The Indians had 336 yards passing and 251 yards of rushing587 yards in all.
Key to the Tribe offense were 81 yards rushing by Revis on six carries and another big night receivingnine receptions for 204 yards.
The Indians got a stop after the first score, then came back to drive the field in eight plays. A 30-yard rush by Revis, and another seven-yard carry set up Carson Davisons plunge from the 4 for the score.
We did some really good things, but we had some execution issues, McNabb said. Its one of those things when you play a team like that. Youve got to get up for everyone you play. Yamhill was giving us their best game and playing to win. Theyre scrappy, but just dont have the talent as some of the teams theyve been playing.
The Indians would twice turn the ball over on the next two series, giving Yamhill the ball at the Tribe 7 on the last one. Two plays later, Yamhills Jacob Wood took the ball over.
Another turnover in the second quarter, would give the Tigers the ball at the Indians 13-yard-line. Wood took a pass to the 1, but the Indians stopped them four straight times. Had Yamhill scored it would have been a tie game.
That defensive stand woke up Scappoose. Davison got an eight-yard run to get them out of the hole, and then Loss went for 24 to the 34. Revis broke loose on a pass from Loss for 66 yards and the next score.
With little time remaining in the half, Revis blocked a YC punt. Loss then found him for 21 yards and the touchdown with just 10 seconds left before the horn. Scappoose led 27-7 at the break.
The second half we came out and played better, McNabb said. We talked about the things that hurt us, about getting our focus, and came out and played better.
Revis had a 28-yard run for one score and an 18-yard pass from Loss for another. The last Tribe score came on an amazing run after a reception by Justice Oman. Scappoose players on the sideline just dropped their jaws as Oman turned what looked first like a short gain into a 70-yard touchdown run.
But, it was again Revis with four touchdowns, and two conversion points that highlighted the game for Scappoose.
Paul is having a great year, McNabb said. Taylor is getting him the ball, and were finding ways to create some mismatches. It puts a lot of pressure on opponents. We snapped the ball directly to him four times, and he takes all snaps (after touchdowns). Every time we have the potential for two points it puts pressure on opponents to spend time practicing to stop him.
The Indians did lose some standing in the rankings, just by virtue of playing 0-6 Yamhill (ranked 38th). They dropped from second to seventh. An opponents winning percentage can hurt or help a team in the rankings. Playing teams with losing records doesnt help, even when you win.
Scappoose is down to their last three regular season and conference games. They host Tillamook this Thursday, following that with an Oct. 19 trip to Seaside, and finish with Astoria visiting on Oct. 26.
I definitely like being 2-0 (in league), McNabb said. Its a great position to be in. I like where were at. Were getting a little bit better every week, but we still have room for improvement. Were peaking at the right time.
