St. Helens seems to be getting better with every race

The St. Helens High cross country teams had a decent showing in a four-way meet at McCormick Park in St. Helens on Wednesday afternoon.

The Lions’ Bryan Strang turned in a decent 17:15 on the 5K course, finishing just two seconds behind Cody Thompson of Sherwood.

by: JOHN BREWINGTON - Bryan Strang has taken the lead for the St. Helens boys' cross country team this season. It was a close race for the Lions and Bowmen, they ended up tied overall and had to go to the sixth runner to determine the dual meet winner. The winner of their dual might have turned on an equipment failure. St. Helens Dave Sumsion lost his shoe along the course and hobble in for fifth place. If he had been able to move up just one place against Sherwood, the Lions had the meet.

“The boys are doing better than expected as long as they can keep their shoe on,” Tinkle said. “That cost us the meet with Sherwood, but things like that happen. Bryan Strang ran well for the boys. Casey Cooke has returned from an injury and is looking good. Nathan Reed had a good, solid performance.”

Both teams finished ahead of Milwaukie and Rex Putnam under the dual meet scoring format.

St. Helens girls, down a little bit because of injuries, beat two of the three visiting teams, also falling the Sherwood. Cynthia Fenrich finished sixth overall and Emily Hepworth was 12th.

“The girls ran well too,” Tinkle added. “Cynthia had a good race and was able to run with the Sherwood girls. Emily Hepworth continues to get better and gain experience. The rest of the girls are getting faster and racing better. We just need to tighten up our pack.”

St. Helens is at the Star City Invitational Wednesday, and Thursday hosts the annual Trojan Relays at Trojan Park.
