Lady Lions tapped for all-league teams

St. Helens has nine volleyball players picked, two named for first team

St. Helens Coach Tom Ray was named Coach of the Year in the NWOC for guiding the team to a second place finish. The team advanced from the play-ins with a win over Hermiston, but dropped out of the state playoffs with a loss at Marshfield.

The Lady Lions earned second place in the eight-team NWOC, their highest finish ever in the 5A conference. They return nine players from this year’s team and lose six seniors.

Junior Gabby Susee, a 6-foot, 1-inch junior, was picked at middle blocker for the first team, while senior Jillian Ross (5-6) was chosen as a setter.

Second-team honors went to Brooke Cathers, a 5-11 senior, and to Taylor Albertson, 6-0, sophomore.

Honorable mention went to five St. Helens players: Kali Moore, 5-7 junior all-around; Ocean Jabonek, 5-8 senior hitter; Madison Kaplan, 5-3 DS/Libero; Haley Mann-Miller, 5-8 senior DS/Libero; Megan Thompson, 5-6 senior DS/Libero.

Player of the Year was Kathryn Groenweghe of Sherwood.
