Tribe swimmers show potential at Tillamook Invitational
SAT tests hamper effort at first meet
The Scappoose swim teams are missing many of the elite athletes that took them to their second-straight district title and places in the 4A state meet last season.
Still, Coach David Richmond is optimistic about how the squad might do this season.
I keep using the word potential to describe this team, when Im asked about our team, Richmond said. We see a lot of it.
The Indians embarked on their first meet of the season Saturday at the seven-team Tillamook Invitational. Scappoose was missing six of their swimmersout for SAT tests, including one of the few top swimmers from last season, Sadie Krahn.
We were encouraged by what we saw, Richmond said. Were mixing it up and going to let kids try new and different events. Many of our returning athletes were swimming better or times close to the end of last year, which is tough to do this early in the season.
Richmond noted that several of his athletes have been off for a week or two from practice due to fall sports that went into the playoffs.
Sam Herscovitz, Stefany Alvarez, Marie Hannah, Molly Orr, and Mick Vanek all had really solid meets, the coach added. I thought Gilberto Martinez also had some nice results in his races. Marie got some good confidence from racing a solid lead-off leg in the medley relay and in her butterfly event coming off a summer injury. We were really pleased with our first year swimmers who had nice performances in their heats. Overall, the first year swimmers had a nice first meet in terms of their times as well.
