Tough second halves leave St. Helens short

by: JOHN BREWINGTON - St. Helens' Rianne Tupper tries to get a shot off during last Friday's match-up with McMinnville. The St. Helens Lady Lions didn’t want for effort, but they needed a little staying power in the second half with losses to Hillsboro and 6A McMinnville.

The team travelled to Hilhi and forged a slim 8-5 lead in the first quarter. They only scored three in the second period, but were down just 13-11 at the break. A 12-2 third quarter left them down by 12, and they finished with a 33-23 loss.

The Lady Lions Michelle Sass was the only player in the game in double figures, scoring 12.

On Friday, St. Helens hosted McMinnville and again had a good first quarter, taking a 10-8 lead. McMinnville pulled away in the second, and then overwhelmed the Lady Lions in the second half, outscoring them 43-21.

The Lady Lions are now 1-3 on the season. They travelled to Hood River Valley on Tuesday and then play two games in the Benson Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 14-15.

They host Jefferson on Dec. 21 in their last game before Christmas break. They host David Douglas and Benson over the break (Dec. 27-28).
