Indians fall to 5A basketball teams

Scappoose gets off to a slow start against Roosevelt,Wilsonville, doesn't recover

by: JOHN BREWINGTON - The Tribe's Mitchell Davis lays out a Wilsonville player during last Friday's game in Scappoose. The Scappoose Indians had little trouble getting going last week against 5A classification teams Roosevelt and Wilsonville.

Roosevelt is currently 3-1 on the season and ranked 13th in 5A. Wilsonville is ranked 15th and 4-1 on the season. They have played all 4A teams in their first five games.

Against Roosevelt, the Indians could pump just five points through the hoop in the first quarter, while Roosevelt tallied 24. Scappoose stayed with them in the last three quarters, only being outscored by three, but the Indians couldn’t make a dent in the first-quarter margin.

It was a different story against Wilsonville. Neither team could get the ball to drop in the first half of the first period, but neither was taking many shots. After four minutes the score stood 2-2. Then Wilsonville went on an 11-0 run to end the quarter with a 13-2 advantage.

Scappoose picked up their defense in the second period, and didn’t allow the Wildcats a bucket until just 1:09 remaining in the half. Scappoose was taking shots, and put seven points through early in the period to cut the lead to nine. Wilsonville got two quick buckets at the end, and Taylor Loss added one for Scappoose. The Indians trailed just 17-11 at the break.

The Wildcats would have just one field goal in the third period, but sank nine of 10 free throws. A long-range three-pointer by Paul Revis at the buzzer left the Tribe down by eight at the end of the frame.

The Tribe couldn’t connect at the free-throw line and Wilsonville built their lead with a 14-1 run in the first five minutes of the fourth. That put the game away.

Revis and Ryan Henness led the Indians’ scoring with five points apiece.

Scappoose was at R.A. Long on Monday night and hosts Kelso this Wednesday. Friday, Dec. 21 both the boys and the girls head to Taft for a game.

Over the holidays, the Indians play three games at the Sisters Tournament, Dec. 27-29. The club has three more preseason outings in January before they open league play at Tillamook on Jan. 15.
