Short-handed Lions place in tournament
Lions have two champions and three second places in their own tournament
Even though they are short in numbers this season, the St. Helens Lions turned in a decent performance Saturday at their own St. Helens Invitational Wrestling Tournament.
Scappoose sent a limited contingent to the tournament as well, and also had some achievement.
The Lions Jose Silva took top honors at 120 pounds. He topped wrestlers from Mark Morris and Tigard, before downing teammate Jesse Vanderwall in the championship.
Also taking a title for the Lions was Andrew Duggan at 132 pounds. Duggan was in one of the large brackets. He beat wrestlers from Seaside and Tigard before topping Cody Erhardt of Scappoose in the finals.
Second place finishes for St. Helens were posted by Cole Snider at 113, Vanderwall at 120, and Jon Luttrell at 152 pounds.
The Indians had four chamoions in the tourney, and two second places.
Alex Foumal topped wrestlers from Gig Harbor, Wash. and Mark Morris to win the 126 pound title. He beat teammate Justin Couch, in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
The Indians Devin Ray (220) and Brenden Bailey (285) just had one match each in the tournament, both beating wrestlers from Tigard for their titles.
Second places for Scappoose were notched by Erhardt at 132, and Jeff VanDomelen at 182.
St. Helens hosts Rex Putnam this Thursday in their second league match of the season. They are at the Pac Rim Tournament in Seaside this Friday and Saturday.
