Tribe grapplers finish fourth at Oregon Wrestling Classic

Indians put up a good battle to reach trophy round

by: JEREMY DUECK - Scappoose's Justin Couch takes down an Astoria wrestler during last week'' double dual in Scappoose. The Indians rolled over Seaside and Astoria, giving up just one weight on the evening. The Indians would go on to take fourth at the Oregon Wrestling Classic in Redmond over the weekend. The Scappoose Indians finished fourth at the Oregon Wrestling Classic in Redmond—the unofficial state dual meet championship.

Scappoose clobbered their first two opponents in pool play, Philomath and Madras, but came up short against Henley in a hard-fought match, 48-33.

In the quarterfinals, they drubbed North Marion 58-12 to advance them to the semifinals.

A loss to Sweet Home in the semis, and then a loss in a relatively close match with Tillamook left them fourth overall.

“We had a great weekend getting the opportunity to compete against most of the top programs in the state,” Coach Jim Jones said. “This competition gives us an opportunity to see where we are at and refocus our efforts for the upcoming weeks. Fourth is a great finish for us and many of our athletes competed well with or defeated some of the top ranked wrestlers in the state.”

Jones was also pleased with his team’s comportment.

“This weekend was great not just because of what we accomplished on the mat but perhaps more importantly for everything our groups does well off the mat. We received compliments about our behavior, character and attitudes at nearly every place we stopped. A great overall team effort to consistently do what is right – very impressive,” he said.

Jones was impressed by the toughness Ryan Bond showed.

“Ryan Bond had a tooth nearly go through his cheek (and still) ended up finishing the match by pinning his opponent. (He) went to the hospital where he received five stitches and then finished out the (rest of the) tournament. Talk about tough.”

Scappoose has a double dual match at Banks this week. They face both Banks and Yamhill-Carlton. They are 2-0 in Cowapa League dual matches. They’ll finish the league dual match season at Tillamook on Feb. 1. They host the Marv Lofland Invitational on Feb. 2.
