Tribe loses by three to Seaside; downs YC

by: JOHN BREWINGTON - Scappoose's Abby Kessi goes up for a shot during last week's game with Seaside. The Scappoose Lady Indians kept their playoff hopes alive last week with a win at Yamhill-Carlton and with a close game against second-place Seaside.

“We had a pretty good game plan and executed. It was nice to get a win,” Coach Kevin Buse said of the YC game.

“We’re just getting better,” he said. “We’ve made our practices more intense and made players accountable. We’re a much more mature team entirely. We’ve had a lot of growing pains but we’re getting better.”

The game with YC was just a 1-2 point game much of the way, but midway through the first quarter the Lady Indians were able to get some separation. They made five of six free throws in the closing moments and held on for the win.

“We’re starting to score some points,” Buse noted. “We put in a new offense and it’s taken awhile to get it in shape. Our goal was to be ready for the playoffs and it looks like we will be.”

The 46 points for Scappoose was their season high. They had 43 earlier in the league opener against Tillamook.

On Tuesday, the Lady Indians fell behind Seaside early and never retook the lead, but they did make it close by the end. Seaside was up 11-6 after one, and 24-18 at the break. Both teams scored eight in the third period, and Scappoose had a 9-6 edge in the fourth period.

Abby Kessi led Scappoose in scoring with nine.

The team has lost one of their top players, Brittany Catlow, for the season with a torn ACL. She was to have surgery this week. Some other players, like Lacey Updike, have stepped up Buse said.

The team is currently in third place in the league, just a game behind second-place Seaside. The Tribe had a big game with Astoria in town on Tuesday, and this Friday they host Tillamook. On Tuesday, they’ll be on the road against league-leading Banks.
