Tribe girls win fourth Cowapa League swimming championship

Scappoose edges Tillamook by just eight points to win league crown

by: JOHN BREWINGTON - Scappoose's Stefany Alvarez won the girls 200 freestyle Friday and the Lady Indians won their fourth straight Cowapa League championship. Sadie Krahn had a first in the 500 free. The Scappoose Lady Indians posted their fourth consecutive Cowapa League championship on Friday, besting favored Tillamook by a slim eight points.

The Tribe got some great performances from Sadie Krahn, Stef Alvarez, Jillian Werderber, Marie Hannah, and Kiara Single.

“We came in as underdogs to Tillamook on the form chart,” Scappoose Coach David Richmond said. “We had our sights set on this goal all season. We had our goal-setting team meeting after the first meet of the season because we had so many new faces this season. We encouraged the girls to dream big and they decided they wanted to do all they could to four-peat as league champions.  It’s really remarkable considering we graduated 12 seniors from last season’s girls team and many of them were state finalists.”

The best finishes for the Tribe were posted by Alvarez and Krahn. Alvarez took first in the 200 freestyle, winning by four seconds. She was second in the 100 butterfly. Krahn was second in the shortest event (50 free) and won the longest (500 free). Both girls also swam on two relay teams.

“Coming into this season I was constantly asked how I thought our girls team would do this year coming off an incredible season last year,” Richmond noted. “My answer was the same to just about everyone. It’s a team I thought had a lot of potential. If we developed and worked hard I thought we’d be in the hunt when it mattered in February.”

He added, “This is one of the hardest working teams we’ve coached. They got after it day after day and stayed late without complaint. Even on voluntary practice days half our girl’s team would show up. We’re very proud of them. It was a lot of fun to see all the smiles and share in the excitement with them. When we got on the bus to head over to the meet and felt the energy, you got the feeling it was going to be another special day.”

Richmond noted that both the boys and girls had over 50 personal bests on the day.

The boys didn’t have as much depth as the girls and finished fourth overall. Still, they got some good efforts from Kenny Klippel, Keegan Carey and Will Sprute.

Both teams head to the district swim meet this Friday and Saturday in Astoria. Those qualifying will move on to state the following weekend at Mt.
