Cheesemakers and Indians square off in another classic battle on the mat
Sometimes team wrestling matches dont take that long to decide, but that wasnt the case when the Indians and Cheesemakers went at it on Friday night in Tillamook.
Forfeits and pins can speed up the time, but there was just a bit of that Friday night. There were no forfeits and just three pins. Just one other match ended early, on a technical fall in the third round.
That meant the remaining 11 matches went the distance, lasting at least six minutes each.
It was a classic match-up of the two rivals and this time Tillamook took the final honors, 34-20, but obviously not without a challenge from the Tribe.
An excellent match between two quality teams, Scappoose Coach Jim Jones said.
The matches started at 120 pounds and Tillamook began with the first pin of the evening. Taylor Walden of Scappoose came back with a 5-2 decision. The Indians Ben Gadbois lost a tight 3-0 decision at 132, and Ryan Bond lost a decision at 138. Hunter Hoyt won an 11-5 match, but Michael Lohman lost another tight 3-0 match at 152 pounds. Johnathan Tardif lost 9-3 at 160, but Isaiah Goodrich won 6-2 at 170. Tyson Broadbent lost just 3-0 at 182 and Bailey Apon lost the closest match of the night, 3-2. Devin Ray was down just 3-0 when he got pinned near the end of his match. Branden Bailey answered for Scappoose with the only first-round pin of the night. Braxton Sue followed with a win by technical fall. The Indians were just too far back to overtake, though, and lost the last match of the night 5-1.
The Indians head back down to Tillamook for a one-day district tournament. The top four wrestlers move on to regionals. Scappoose will host the regional tournament on Feb. 16. The top four wrestlers from regionals move on to the 4A state tournament.
