Indians send 10 wrestlers to state tourney
Kurt Mode, Ryan Bond, Isaiah Goodrich win regional mat titles
The Scappoose Indians didnt get everything they wanted out of the regional tournament, but they accomplished quite a bit with three regional champions, a second, and seven third places.
The regional champions werent the same three that came out of district a week ago. This time freshman Kurt Mode at 106 pounds, senior Ryan Bond at 138, and junior Isaiah Goodrich at 170 won titles.
The tournament was a huge success, Scappoose Coach Jim Jones said, praising the work of his volunteers. This was a great group effort by the Scappoose wrestling community to host such a well run and outstanding event.
Mode had lost to Collin Purinton of Banks in the district finals, but reversed the score for a 7-3 win over Purinton in the regional finals.
Kurt had an exceptional tournament, Jones said. Colin and Kurt are both top quality wrestlers and have met several times this season. This is the first time Kurt has beaten Colin.
Bond had lost to Jacob Fowler of Tillamook, 8-4, in the finals at district. This time around, a motivated Bond pulled off an overtime decision to win regionals.
Ryan has developed into a very good team leader,
Jones noted. He brings a toughness to our team that is appreciated.
The Indians Isaiah Goodrich, probably the teams most technically proficient wrestler, had lost a heartbreaker in the semifinals at district to Myron Moore. Goodrich beat the top seeded Tillamook wrestler, William Prince, 6-1 in the semis, sending him to the finals.
That felt good, he said afterwards, but he knew he still had work to do in the finals. He won just 1-0 but was gratified with the victory.
Isaiah Goodrich had an exceptional tournament avenging last weeks loss to Myron Moore from Tillamook to win the tournament, Jones said.
The Indians district champs, Hunter Hoyt, Devin Ray, and Branden Bailey all qualified for state, but not in first place.
Hoyt , a junior, came back from a semifinal loss to Jacob Davidson of Estacada (5-2) to post a major decision and a pin for third place.
The Tribes Devin Ray, a sophomore, had beaten
Tillamooks Marcus Cheney 4-2 at district, but lost a tight finals bout to him 6-2 this time around.
The Indians big guy, Branden Bailey, a senior, was Outstanding Wrestler at district. He easily won his first match at regionals with a 45-second pin. Against Jose Santiago of Tillamook in the semifinals he threw Santiago on his back once, but it was ruled out of bounds. He tried the move again and didnt quite end up on top. He struggled for half a minute before he was pinned. Bailey bounced back to post pins in 36 seconds and 1:12 to take third place. Hell be a formidable foe at state.
The Tribe had four other wrestlers qualify for state with third place finishes.
Taylor Walden, a junior, lost his first-round match by an overtime decision to Kyle Kintz of Gladstone, 3-2. He came back to win his next match by a pin, and then posted a 3-0 decision over the district champ, Jordan Middaugh. That put him up against Kintz again and Walden came out with a 10-3 win this time.
Jones said Taylor suffered a difficult loss early in the tournament that put him in a tough position to qualify for state. He faced Joe Middaugh from YC in the consolation quarterfinals. Taylor has wrestled Joe a number of times in the last few years, never beating him. He wrestled a very smart match and ending up beating him to move on and finish third.
Ben Gadbois, a sophomore, won his first round match at the tournament, 13-7, then lost a 5-1 decision in the semifinals. He came back with a pin and a 7-3 decision to take third.
The Indians' Johnathon Tardif, a sophomore, lost his first round match, but battled back through the consolation bracket with a quick pin, a win over teammate Michael Lohman, and a technical fall for third. Lohman had won his first match, but then lost in the semis, and had to face Tardif.
Bailey Apon, a senior, also made the semifinals for the Tribe at 182 pounds. He lost in the semis, but came back to beat teammate Tyson Broadbent, a freshman, and then post a major decision for his third place.
Teammates Michael Lohman and Johnathon Tardif as well as teammates Bailey Apon and Tyson Broadbent wrestled each other for the right to go to state. Tardif and Apon ended up winning the matches, which is bitter sweet for everyone involved. Its never fun to put out one of your teammates. Jones said.
