Andrew Duggan, Jon Luttrell, Dustin Ford will wrestle this weekend

Despite being more than a little shorthanded, the St. Helens Lions had a good showing at the Northwest Oregon Conference district wrestling tournament at Sandy last Friday and Saturday.

The Lions will send three wrestlers to the state tournament at Memorial Coliseum this Friday and Saturday: Andrew Duggan 132 pounds; Jon Luttrell at 152; and Dustin Ford at 195.

Ford had the highest finish for the squad, making it all the way to the finals before losing. He was seeded second and advanced with a bye, a first-round pin, and an 11-0 decision. He lost to Ryan Jurgens of Sherwood in the finals.

Duggan finished third overall. He moved up with a first-round pin, posted a major decision in the second round, but lost in the semis. He came back with two pins to win the consolation bracket.

It was a similar path for Luttrell. He got a bye in the first round, won by a technical fall and then lost by a pin in the semis to the district champ. He came back with two pins to take third.

Duggan will face T. J. Hancock of Pendleton in the first round of the state tournament. Luttrell is up against Jeremy Fischer of Hood River Valley. Ford takes on Ramon Ramirez of Hood River Valley in his first match at state.
