Indians place five wrestlers at state tourney
Devin Ray takes third; Kurt Mode, Bailey Apon fourth
The Scappoose Indians would have liked to have more wrestlers place higher in the 4A state tournament last Friday and Saturday at Memorial Coliseum, but they still did okay.
Top finisher for the Tribe was sophomore Devin Ray in third at 220 pounds. Freshman Kurt Mode was fourth in a tough 106-pound class, while senior Bailey Apon took fourth the hard way, coming all the way back through the consolation bracket after losing his first match.
The kids wrestled hard and competed, Scappoose Coach Jim Jones said. We made some little position and technical mistakes that might have changed the margin of error. At a state tournament you cant afford to make minor errors.
He was pleased overall, though. It was a solid effort. Our effort was very good, Jones said.
Ray had a very good tournament, Jones said. He won his first two matches, including a second-round win over the No. 4 seed. He would lose to the eventual champion in the semifinals, but then came back with a decision and a pin to take third.
Jones was also particularly impressed by Apon's fight back to a fourth-place finish. Apon lost to Stephen Spenst of Baker in the first round, but then won four straight matches before losing to Spenst again in the consolation finals.
Mode also impressed the coach. He won his first two matches, but then lost to the eventual second-place finisher. The weight champion, Collin Purinton of Banks, was someone Mode beat at regionals. Mode won in the consolation semifinals, but lost a close, 8-6, match in the finals.
Taking home fifth place finishes were Isaiah Goodrich at 170 pounds and Branden Bailey at 285. Goodrich had a good tournament. He posted a pin in the opening round, and then lost a 5-3 decision. He had to go into overtime to win a 2-1 victory in the first consolation round, then posted a 6-1 decision. Goodrich would get pinned in the consolation semifinals, and was beaten by the same wrestler that had knocked him out of the championship bracket, 3-1.
Bailey also fought back from a first round loss to eventually take fifth. He posted pins in his next two matches, including a win over the No. 2 seed, before losing to the No. 1 seed by a pin in the consolation semifinals. Bailey pinned the No. 3 seed for fifth place.
Jones added that although he didn't place well at state, he was pleased with the attitude and team leadership that Ryan Bond (138 pounds) had shown through the season and at state. Bond is one of three seniors of the 10 that went to state. Three of those returning are currently juniors, three are sophomores, and one is a freshman.
