Indians place five wrestlers at state tourney

Devin Ray takes third; Kurt Mode, Bailey Apon fourth

by: JOHN BREWINGTON - Scappoose's Kurt Mode lost this semifinal match, but the freshman had a good overall state tournament finishing fourth. The Scappoose Indians would have liked to have more wrestlers place higher in the 4A state tournament last Friday and Saturday at Memorial Coliseum, but they still did okay.

Top finisher for the Tribe was sophomore Devin Ray in third at 220 pounds. Freshman Kurt Mode was fourth in a tough 106-pound class, while senior Bailey Apon took fourth the hard way, coming all the way back through the consolation bracket after losing his first match. by: JOHN BREWINGTON - The Tribe's Devin Ray took third at the 4A state tournament, bouncing back after a semifinal loss to the eventual state champion.

“The kids wrestled hard and competed,” Scappoose Coach Jim Jones said. “We made some little position and technical mistakes that might have changed the margin of error. At a state tournament you can’t afford to make minor errors.”

He was pleased overall, though. “It was a solid effort. Our effort was very good,” Jones said.

Ray had a very good tournament, Jones said. He won his first two matches, including a second-round win over the No. 4 seed. He would lose to the eventual champion in the semifinals, but then came back with a decision and a pin to take third.

Jones added that although he didn't place well at state, he was pleased with the attitude and team leadership that Ryan Bond (138 pounds) had shown through the season and at state. Bond is one of three seniors of the 10 that went to state. Three of those returning are currently juniors, three are sophomores, and one is a freshman.
