St. Helens' Mariah Mulcahy throws a three-hit shut-out

by: JOHN BREWINGTON - St. Helens sophomore pitcher Mariah Mulcahy threw a four-hit shut-out in the season opener against 6A McNary on Monday. She also knocked in the only two runs of the game. The St. Helens Lady Lions played nearly to perfection in posting a 2-0 season-opening win over 6A McNary on Monday in St. Helens.

“It was one of the most efficient wins we’ve had since I’ve been here,” St. Helens Coach Jeff Edwards said. “The pitching was outstanding, we had timely hitting, the coaching was on the spot. I thought we played a great game against a good 6A program.”

St. Helens played errorless ball, but did have a couple of glitches near the end of the contest. McNary had two runners on base with two outs, but St. Helens’ Mariah Mulcahy bore down from the pitching plate to strike out the last batter.

Mulcahy threw a very good opening game. She gave up just three hits, but struck out nine and didn’t allow a run. She helped her own cause with a single and a triple to drive in the Lady Lions’ only runs.

The runs came in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings. Both times, Mulcahy came up with hits to drive in Michelle Sass. Both were 2-3 on the day, accounting for four of the six hits St. Helens posted. Taylor Leal and Stevie Strawn had the other hits.

McNary was ranked eighth in the state last year, and the first of several 6A foes St. Helens will face in the pre-season.

“McNary has a great program and they are good,” Edwards added. “We only had six hits but it was timely. Their pitcher is headed off to play college ball after this season.”

The only downside of the game for St. Helens was letting one high fly drop in the infield and not getting a runner interference call right afterwards. Mulcahy seemed to get even faster on the next batter, striking her out and ending the game.

St. Helens is off to Canby this Thursday, and hosts Hood River Valley this Friday. Monday, Edwards is taking on his brother’s team at Tigard. They host Newberg on March 21. The team is at Medford for a tournament over spring break.
