St. Helens surprises rest of NWOC team with finish just behind favorite Sherwood.
The St. Helens High boys golf team got the season off to a good start with a second place showing among the seven Northwest Oregon Conference teams on hand at Wildwood on Monday.
The Lions hosted the tournament, but still had a good outing on their home course. They shot a 339 overall. Sophomore Jacob Roxey led the way with an 81, followed by senior Nathan Hunter with an 84, junior Eric Aldridge with an 86, and Michael Hewlett with an 88. The fifth man, junior Cody Teyema shot a 94.
Steady consistent play by Jacob Roxey (led to) 12 pars for a solid 81, Coach Dave Lawrence said. Captain Nathan Hunter had nine pars, despite fighting with his putter. Newcomers Eric Aldridge and mighty Michael Hewlett both had eight pars each. Michael had a birdie on the seventh hole. Cody Teyema made six pars and birdied No. 18.
Lawrence said it was a good beginning. Second place on our home course gave us a good start and raised some eyebrows from the other coaches. Sherwood returns all but one of last years championship team.
All of the NWOC teams play each week on a course hosted by one of the schools. St. Helens has traditionally hosted the opening match.
Team scores: Sherwood 321, St. Helens 339, Liberty 343, Milwaukie 357, Parkrose 362, Sandy 379, Wilsonville 424, Putnam DNP.
