Milwaukie track teams top St. Helens

Lion boys can't keep pace with Mustang's speed

by: JOHN BREWINGTON - HURDLING. St. Helens' Alyna Habel leads the way as others struggle in the 100 high hurdles during Wednesday's track meet against Milwaukie in St. Helens. Habel won both hurdle events. The St. Helens High track teams didn’t have a good answer for the Milwaukie speed in the shorter races Wednesday afternoon, and both were up on the losing end of the dual meet.

The St. Helens boys saw Milwaukie dominate the 100, 200, and 400 races, plus the 110 hurdles and the short relay. St. Helens got some of that back in the longer races.

The Lions’ Bryan Strang turned in two of the most exciting races of the day. He first held off a Milwaukie charge to win the 1,500 by just over a second. In the 800, it was a back and forth race, and when Strang tried to kick it into overdrive to the finish the Milwaukie runner tried to block him in the front. Strang feinted one way and slipped in front for another close win.by: JOHN BREWINGTON - St. Helens Bryan Strang pulls in front of Milwaukie's Chris Spanovich during the 800 meter run on Wednesday. Spanovich tried to block Strang from passing but he slipped in front.

The Lions also gained firsts from Kendrick Alvarez in the 300 hurdles and won the 4x400 Relay with Alvarez, Jeff Steinke, Tanner Long, and Joey Johnston.

The Lions got seconds in the shot from Jacob Zartman and in the discus from Nate Reed. It was the javelin where Reed really impressed, beating teammate Nick Dummer by 25-feet with a 174-9 toss. The Lions also had a pole vault first from Chris Gray.

The Lady Lions also had their moments on the day and were closer in the team scoring than the boys, losing by just eight.

Top efforts for them included a second by Kylie Reinholdt in the 100, a first from Patience Marshall in the 800, and two firsts from Alyna Habel in both hurdle events. The Lady Lions won the 4x400 relay and got firsts in two field events. Dana Sukau won the javelin with a 106-9 toss and finished second in the shot. Freshman Athena Duggan won the pole vault. Reinholdt was second in the triple jump.

The Lions are at Wilsonville for a meet next week, and host the Lower Columbia Invitational on Saturday.
