Lady Lions tennis team unbeaten

Squad still has one match to finish and another to make up, but is off to a good start

The first few matches of the tennis season have gone pretty well for the St. Helens Lady Lions—four outings, three wins, and one match unfinished.

The squad picked up their fourth win on Tuesday with a 7-2 victory over visiting Liberty. They only lost one singles and one doubles match.

Haley Mann-Miller, Madison Kaplan, and Jo’Cee Giroski each won their singles matches. Lauren Chambers lost her match, but only 7-5 in the last set.by: JOHN BREWINGTON - St. Helens' Jo'Cee Giroski serves a ball during her match against Liberty on Tuesday.

Mann-Miller played through a nagging hip injury to a straight set win, while Kaplan and Giroski cruised to victories

In the doubles, the team of Hanna Opdahl and Lexi Normine won a tight match.

“It's beginning to look like our No. 1 doubles team of Opdahl/Normine will be a top NWOC team, but the true test will be against the strong squads of Sherwood and Wilsonville, which we face in the coming week,” coach Michael Gregor said.

While their No. 2 team lost, the Lady Lions did get doubles wins from Jessica January and Nikki Spreadborough, Alex Fritz and Thitika Pratuangvijikitul, and Hanna Spears and Taylor Albertson.

Gregor noted that this was the first time in four years that Liberty had faced them without now-graduated Ayaka Terakawa, one of the league's top players over that time.

St. Helens had a make-up match with Rex Putnam on Thursday, but rain was forecast and it may have been postponed again. They were to travel to Sherwood on Friday. Tuesday this coming week, the squad is at Wilsonville and hosts Sandy on Friday. It's possible there could also be make-up matches next week.
