St. Helens posts a 5-4 win to stay unbeaten
The St. Helens Lady Lions pulled off their first tennis win over Wilsonville on Tuesday, earning a slim 5-4 decision.
This is the first win against Wilsonville in girls tennis in the history of our program, coach Michael Gregor said. This has been a personal goal of the coaching staff since we came into the league six years ago. We knew that this was the squad to make it happen, we just were hoping that the margin would have been a little greater.
Gregor added, Lauren Chambers lost a tough three-set match in No. 4 singles. Lauren was up a service break at 4-3 in the deciding set, but her opponent pulled off three straight games for the win. It was a tough loss for Lauren who has certainly had her share of three-set matches this season. Haley Mann-Miller had her hands full with the No. 2 ranked player in the state, sophomore Haley Moss. She should be a big contender for the state title.
He noted that the doubles team continues to gel and play better as tandems. Opdahl and Normine have put themselves in a great position for seeding in the district tournament as they are one of the few undefeated doubles teams in the league.
The Lady Lions host Sandy on Friday, April 12 and are at Parkrose on Monday, and Rex Putnam on Wednesday. They also have a match to finish and another to make-up.
