Lions' golf team takes third at Quail Valley

St. Helens also has a third at West Albany Invitational

The St. Helens Lions turned in a solid third at the weekly Northwest Oregon Conference tournament on Monday.

Liberty hosted the tournament at Quail Valley.

Sherwood, coached by Jeff Stirling, had the top team effort with a combined 310, while Liberty was second at 319. The Lions finished with a 336.

St. Helens’ top four golfers shot in the 80s. Cody Teyama led the team with an 82, while Jacob Roxey had an 84. Nathan Hunter and Michael Hewlett both shot 85s.

“Cody worked his way to a top 10 placement with a stretch of nine pars in a row and 12 pars overall, including five of the six hardest holes,” coach David Lawrence said. “Jacob Roxey tied for the most birdies in the field with four and had a strong finish. Nathan Hunter was just one over par through seven holes when his putter absolutely deserted him. Michael Hewlett lipped out a hole-in-one on the sixth hole and competes on every hole. Eric Aldridge had a real topsy-turvey round, his first out of the 80s.”

Top medalist in the tournament was Joe Reed of Sherwood with a two-under-par 72.

The Lions will be at Chehalem Glenn this coming Monday for a NWOC tournament hosted by Sherwood.

Golfers third at West Albany Invitational

The St. Helens golf team took a third overall at the Springfield Country Club in the West Albany Invitational on Saturday, April 6.

All the Lions were in the upper 80s and low 90s on a course new to them.

The Lions were competing against West Albany, Westview, McNary and South Albany. Westview has the returning state 6A champion.

“Nathan (Hunter) and Jacob (Roxey) both tied for seventh overall on a course we had never played and (that) was stretched out to its maximum length,” St. Helens coach Lawrence said. He said hole No. 7 was a 475-yard par 4, playing into the wind.

“Toby (Carlson), Eric (Aldridge), and Michael (Hewlett) played their last several holes into the wind in some heavy rain,” Lawrence added.
