Tired Lions do okay at McMinnville

Thomas Hughes sets PR in high hurdles

The St. Helens Lions were doing a little respite on Friday at the McMinnville Invitational.

“On Friday, we took a very tired team to McMinnville,” St. Helens coach Gerry Tinkle said. “It was a small meet with a relaxed atmosphere. Just what we needed after two big meets on the previous weekends.”

Tinkle said the standout effort in the meet came from Thomas Hughes in the high hurdles. He set a personal best with a 15.65 effort, about a second faster than previous races this season, and a half-second faster that last season.

“Nothing really stands out in the performances for the rest of the meet,” Tinkle said. “We competed well, but there were not a lot of PRs. As district approaches we had hoped to be faster in the sprints, but we still have a long way to go. Injuries and apathy have kept us from getting where we need to be. Hopefully after a little rest our times will come down. We are looking pretty good in the throws though.”

The boys were second and the girls third in the overall meet standings. After Hughes first the other top finishes for the boys included a first for the 4x400 relay team (Bryan Strang, Jeff Steinke, Hughes, and Nate Reed) and second by Strang in the 3,000, and Dillion Crook in the javelin. Reed laid off the javelin on Friday, resting for the Centennial Invitational the next day.

Kylie Reinholdt won both the triple jump and high jump at the meet, plus had a fourth in the 100. The girls also got firsts from Megan Waite in the 800, a second from Patience Marshall in the 1,500 and a first from Amy Sumsion in the 3,000.
