Scappoose holds back against Seaside

With Jesuit meet coming up Tribe boys hold back a bit on way to victory

The Scappoose High track teams came up with wins at Seaside last Wednesday, but didn’t pour it on, holding back some of their elite athletes from their best events.

Some of the Indians were competing in the Nike Twilight Relays at Jesuit Friday May 3.

“We basically rested several athletes as much as we could,” Tribe coach David Harley said, “especially those that have been carrying the bulk of the load all season. The athletes who were to compete Friday night (at Jesuit) did very little. Some, like Charlie Davidson, did nothing at all. The big thing to take away from Seaside was that it was a chance for the varsity athletes to get familiar with the district site and begin to think about heading back down there next week.”

The boys still won by almost 40 points. Asa Flanagan was first in the high jump and triple jump. Justice Oman was first in the 100 and second in the 200, while Jarret White was second in the 100 and first in the 200. Mason Reardon, Dan Carrier and Stephen Gift were 1-2-3 in the 3,000. Scappoose won both relays. Kenny Klippel won the shot and was second in the discus and javelin. Mick Vanek won the pole vault, going 11-feet, 6-inches, and Paul Revis won the long jump.

The girls had a bit closer meet, but still prevailed. Abby Kessi won the 800, Lindsey Marquardt won the 1,500 and Caley Ricker won the 3,000. The Lady Indians also won both relays. Additionally, they got a first from Carly DiPietro in the pole vault.

The Indians hosted Astoria Wednesday and some will compete in a meet at Cottage Grove on Friday. District is at Seaside May 16-17.
